What is Communication?

Communication. We all use it most of us even have even taken a class or two on it throughout our life. However we cannot just say it is when one person talks to another. It is much more complicated then that. Coming down to one definition is hard “For decades communication professionals have had difficulty coming to any consensus about how to define the term communication.” Even though the definition is ever changing through time the working definition we study around is that communication is a process using symbols from a sender to a receiver to get across their point

The most popular symbol we use for communication is noise. Noise is a very broad term that cover a lot. From us using our vocal cords to make a sound like “hello” to uttering out “ahhhh” they both have they’re meaning. We have come to understand that “hello” is a greeting but at the roots it is nothing more then just a sound.

If we look at communication more closely within different communities we can so how different it truly is. As an immigrant when I first moved here the entire language seemed impossible. All I and many others like me needed was time to learn and appreciate the language. As a result we go back to our roots and use symbols that are universal from a wave to a head nod to extending ur thumb and pink tucking in your 3 middle fingers and bringing your hand to your ear which means what ? A phone! Universal symbols are all around us and we usually take them for granted, however when there is a language barrier that is what we always turn to, to communicate.

  1. Vladimir, I really appreciated reading your rendition of communication. You worded it great; it’s a lot more than just talking. I thought it was interesting when you talked about universal symbols that everyone knows without needing to speak the same language.
